The Alzheimer's Society estimates that dementia currently affects over 700,000 people in the UK. Many people talk about the 'demographic time bomb' or 'tidal wave' of older people for which the state cannot afford to cater. The Society believes that this is misleading. A steady, rather than dramatic growth is expected over the next 25 years. The Society's contribution to the Royal Commission on Long Term Care highlights the belief that the state can provide for people's needs as they age. Younger people and dementiaDementia in people under the age of 65 is comparatively rare -however, there are about 17,000 younger people with dementia in the UK.People with dementia who live aloneOver one-third of all people with dementia live alone. The Alzheimer's Society believes that people with dementia who wish to remain in their own homes should be supported to do so for as long as possible. The Alzheimer's Society is the leading care and research charity for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and their families. It is a national membership organisation and works through 250 branches and support groups. The Society has expertise in information and education for carers and professionals. It provides helplines and support for carers, runs quality day and home care, funds medical and scientific research and gives financial help to families in need. It campaigns for improved health and social services and greater public understanding of all aspects of dementia.
