Neil Buckley pens a final account of his mothers suffering and passing from Alzheimer's Disease

My Mother died in January after three years of progressively more virulent symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease.

Near the end she sat in her chair for long periods seemingly unaware of her surroundings. This after years of pacing her room and the corridor of her care home. She required feeding, washing, grooming and changing and apart from me she failed to recognise other members of her family and carers.

You would think her death would be a merciful release - and it was. Both relief laden with a deep sadness for the woman that was.

As a young woman she trained as a nurse, travelled to Budapest to teach and had been moved to India as the war threatened where she worked on decoding enemy messages. She met and married my Father, a serving Army Officer. She taught kindergarten in Australia and followed a hectic Army life moving house over 37 times in her lifetime. Such was her enormous energy, optimism and joy of life.

I was so lucky that she recognise me to the end and would respond a little as we held hands and took a few halting steps or when I tried to coax the words of her favourite carols. When words had almost left her she would still say "thank you" to carers and family.
